Taideilta

Last Saturday we held a taideilta (arts evening) with local artists, poets and musicians at our Aitta-studio in Sirkka. There was a small exhibition of paintings, photographs and works on paper inside the Aitta-studio and in the yard presentations of poetry, singing and performance art. We contributed to the evening with our last performance The Misgivings of Perfect Love.

Update 41- Double Self-portrait

So, this double self-portrait painted by us both has been chosen to be part of the exhibition 'Portrait Now!' at the Frederiksborg castle in Denmark. We look pretty silly in it. If we knew so many people were going to see it, we would had painted ourselves extra real silly.

Details about the exhibition here.

Kiitos Juha Tolonen ja Arktikum!

Our exhibition Flora Lapponica is now finished. We had over 16.000 people visiting during the past six weeks. That is much more than we could have ever expected! We are very happy with the whole journey, honored by sharing it with Juha Tolonen and tremendously grateful and appreciative towards each other for embarking full hearted on this crazy project of making paintings in collaboration.

Now a lititle break and soon starting gathering ideas and inspiration for our show at Kemi Art Museum next year.

kota

La kota es una construcción tradicional lapona. En su seno vive un fuego con algún tipo de asiento alrededor. En la parte superior hay un agujero, para desalojar el humo, así como cumpliendo la función espiritual de apertura hacia el cielo.

Land Quilt

"Quilt, patchwork, land quilt, realms, movement, bardos, wheel of life, cycles, comfort and love, wrap yourself in the land, xxx"

This insightful whatsup message of my brother Aryadharma Aaron Matheson  after seeing a pic of the painting  in process, lends the title to the work and throws light into what Raisa and I intended with the painting and didn't know yet.

Wednesday Update 28

Our studio, an over 100-years old aitta, is very cozy and spirited. But so small that often we have to take our paintings outside to have a proper look!

Some snow fell and melted on the painted snow.

Wednesday Update 26

Wednesday update. On a Saturday. Hehe. At the moment we are experimenting with paint on top of photographs. Precisely, the landscape photographs of our friend Juha Tolonen, with whom we share an exhibition in December at galleria Valo, Arktikum, Rovaniemi. He dared to give us some of his prints. It is playful and fun, as well as a bit scary. Raisa painted a blueish hole in the middle of an atmospheric wintery landscape while Misha occupied himself by making his floating colourful patterns that sail through the picture.

Wednesday Update 25

We spent the past week in Pöntsö, out there in hard-core Lappish nature, looking after Raisa's uncle's gallery, away from our busy Sirkka life (sic).

Anyway, we watched 'Gone With the Wind', the whole movie, hoping that Scarlett and Rhett would lose everything and get together in good vibes, to our utter disappointed.

Misha tripped over and by a magical spell of painting the colours of his blanket ended up on the canvas.
